Is Wine Vegan?
While there are plenty of vegan wines and vegan wine brands, this beverage is not vegan by default. It’s sometimes processed using one of many possibly animal-derived filtering agents. Here are a few examples:
Isinglass (fish bladder)
Egg whites
Gelatin
Fish oil
Casein (the main protein in milk)
However, some brands use a mineral or plant-derived filtering agents, such as charcoal, silica gel, or Kaolin clay. Others simply avoid filtering their wine altogether. Either way, if the winemakers behind your favorite bottle used these methods, it’s almost certainly vegan-friendly.
The great news is, many brands are switching over to vegan methods! However, finding out who is doing so can be tricky. Many vegan wines are not labeled as ‘vegan’, and those that are may be challenging to find or unavailable in many regions. If you’re lucky, your local health food store may have a section set apart for vegan alcoholic beverages.
