Are Pretzels Vegan?
Pretzels are the perfect snack to enjoy at the mall, at the movies, state fairs, carnivals, festivals, and essentially any outdoor event! But, should you continue to nibble on this classic German treat as a vegan?
There are many types of pretzels, and different brands prepare them in different ways. So, while traditional pretzels are made of wheat flour, dry yeast, sugar, salt, warm water, and often a butter glaze, this does not mean all pretzels are vegan or non-vegan. Keep reading to find out who is making vegan pretzels!
Are Soft Pretzels Vegan?
The simple answer is, soft pretzels are often coated in butter. So, if this is the case, they are not vegan. However, this means some may be coated in margarine, which is a more affordable option for some brands than butter.
Alternatively, if you aren't sure whether a pretzel is made with butter, margarine, or neither, you can simply request for yours to be made without it.
However, sometimes butter isn't the only culprit! Bavarian pretzels are sometimes made with milk or other non-vegan ingredients kneaded into the dough itself. So, your best bet is to ask the cashier or waiter if it's possible to prepare your pretzel without any animal products.
Are Auntie Anne's Pretzels Vegan?
Most of Auntie Anne's pretzels, including their Original Pretzel, Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel, Sweet Almond Pretzel, Jalapeño Pretzel, and Raisin Pretzel, are made with vegan dough. So, all you need to do to veganize them is ask for no butter! Check out other vegan-friendly menu items at Auntie Anne's here.
Are Snyder's Pretzels Vegan?
Good news! All of Snyder's Traditional pretzels, with the exception of their Butter Snaps, of course, are vegan-friendly! However, things get more complicated when we move to their Twisted, Rounds, Chocolate Covered, Pretzel Sandwiches, and Flavored pretzel collections.
Their Sea Salt Rounds are vegan, however their Butter Rounds are made with modified butter. We're not talking vegan butter, either! So, these would be off limits for vegans. The Parmesan Garlic, Honey Mustard & Onion, Cheddar Cheese, and Buttermilk Ranch Pretzel Pieces are also all prepared with dairy. On the other hand, their Hot Buffalo, Peanut Butter Filled, and Jalapeño Pretzel Pieces are all vegan-friendly.
You may be happy to learn that Snyder's carries a gluten-free line! Of these gluten free varieties, their Pretzel Rods, Cinnamon Brown Sugar Pieces, Pretzel Sticks, Mini Pretzels, Honey Mustard & Onion Sticks, and Hot Buffalo Wing Pieces are all free from animal derivatives. We're also happy to learn that their Garden Vegetable and Multigrain Braided Twists are vegan!
Meanwhile, none of the products in their Chocolate Covered Pretzels collection are dairy-free. Sadly, none of Snyder's Twisted pretzels are vegan-friendly either, as they all contain dairy. And finally, Snyder's Pretzel Sandwiches are not suitable for vegans.
So, while Snyder's offers a wide variety of products that vegans can happily munch on, not all of them fit the criteria for the vegan diet.
Are Wetzel's Pretzels Vegan?
Luckily, Wetzel's Pretzels does carry two vegan pretzel options, when ordered without butter. These include their Original pretzels and the Sinful Cinnamon pretzels. However, they have mentioned that those with severe food allergies should avoid consuming their products due to cross contamination, so just a heads up!
Are Dot's Pretzels Vegan?
This was the only brand of pretzels we came across that does NOT contain any vegan flavors! Bummer.
Are Kirkland Peanut Butter Pretzels Vegan?
